by Laura Simmons Texas History Collection Baylor University Moat tourists traveling the recently announced Brazos Travel Trail through Coryell County on their way to Hernia-Fair '68 will miss the ruins of one of the most interesting pioneer homes in the area that of Judge O. T. Tyler, who is known as "the father of Coryell County." The ruins of the one-time grand structure, located in a picturesque bend of the Leon River near Oglesby, consist of the rock walls and outlines of several rooms, each with its own fireplace. The site is not too inaccessible and some action should be taken by citizens to mark a id call attention to what was the home of the man who had much to do with the creation of CoryeU County. The house was built about 1859 by Carolyn and O.

T. Tyler as a home for their family. The two had been married at Fort Gates in 1850. At that time Coryell County was still a part of Bell County and their license was the first issued in the just-created county named for Gov. P.

H. Bell. This means that their liccise was also the first issued in Coryell County. Orville Thomas Tyler, a native of West Brookfield, came to Texas in 1834 at the age of 24 years. Choosing his headlight according to the colonization laws of that time, the young man took land just above the three forks of Little River near the present site of Bel ton in Bell County.

TWICE DURING those first few years Tyler was forced to flee his newly-established homestead. In early 1836, following the first armed clashes of the War for Texas Independence, settlers from all parts of the Central Texas area fled eastward to escape the fate promised by Santa Anna and his invading army. Then again, after San Jacinto. Tyler and his neighbors fled the area when Indians threatened to overrun the settlements. It is recorded that when Tyler began his second flight he carried behind him on his horse a nine-year-old girl named Caroline, the daughter of his neighbors, Capt.

and Mrs. Goldsby Childers. It was this girl to whom he was married 14 years later. Tyler and his young bride took up residence near old Fort Gates and in 1859 began work on their first permanent home which was completed sometime about 1861. The family occupied the house only until 1864 when they moved to Salado so the children could have the benefits of education at Salado College.

A short time lAter the house was destroyed by fire thought to have been started when the family living there shut their dgs up inside the house and left them. The dogs apparently knocked something into the fire in one of the fireplaces and the blaze spread to other parts of the house. DURING HIS first years in Coryell County, Tyler raised corn for the military post at Fort Gates and when the garrison was moved westward, he made a number of trips to the new outpost. The route he blazed became known as the Old Corn Road. Sometimes this old trail is called the Phantom Hill I Road or Military Road.

In 1854, when Coryell County was organized from territory belonging to Bell County, O. T. Tyler was among those involved in setting up the new county. He was chosen as the first Chief Justice or County Judge and later served the county in the state legislature. According to an obituary published in the Belton news-oaper when he died in 1886, he "had the county boundaries surveyed, and it is believed assisted personally in the survey, and MRS.
