E. Blankenship of Gates- ville, has achieved stardom as an opera singer here and in August began his second sesson as a fea- tured performer in the Staats- theater, this city's internationally famous 270-year-old opera house. Ilia most outstanding role, that, of Rudolpho in Puccini's "La Boheme." has received rave no tices by the German press. Blank enship also has been offered a con' tract here for the 1959-1960 sea son and plans to remain In Europe indefinitely although he hopes to make yearly guest appearances in America.

Capacity Crowds Like opera houses throughout Europe, the Staatstheater is tax supported, sells tickets by a subscription series, has a 70-man orchestra, and is filled to its 1.5O0 capacity every night Four other American singers are performing here because in Europe, unlike A merica, a young man or woman trained for opera can make a good living by singing. In America, there is almost no opportunity to do this except through singing at New York's Metropolitan Opera House, which engages predominately Euro pean stars and because of its short season can hire only a limited num ber of singers. Blankenship, who speaks German and Italian fluently, is married to the former Barbara Connally of San Antonio and has three child ren, two girls five and four years of age and a boy who is three. Each child speaks German, too. Born in Gatesville, he took his first voice lesson there under Mrs.

After one year at the University of Texas, he transferred to North Texas State and graduated in 1950. Featured on Dallas TV Then he entered New Yorks Juilliard School of Music and sang: the lead in several operatic pre miers including "Capriccio" and "Idomeneo." During the summer 1954 he sang in the opera "Sa lome" and had a thrice-weekly television show at WBAP-TV, where young singer named Pat Boone was making his TV debut at the same time. In the summer of 1955, Mr.

Blankenship taught voice and gave recitals at North Texas State and sang in Dallas. He received a scholarship to the Vienna State Music Academy, grad uated from it in 1956, sang the title role in "Tales of Hoffmann'' and was acclaimed by Vienna cri If yoa drink four cups of coffee a day at a yoa spend $146 a year for it The average family spends only S104 a year for dooton and medicine comlnnoL City Drag Store WS GiVB tM GREEN STAMPS Beakh Prktiea, Ttt CottiLea Titan Erer Mi Mi Enjoy 0 of HUE SEED I'lHII'IH Dealers in Legumes and Field Seeds GUARANTY BANK AND TRUST CO.
