He Summer vacations will become just a memory for more than 1,800 students who will be trooping into classrooms this morning (Thursday) for the start of a new school year in the Gatesville Independent School District. And they, along with students in Coryell County's four other school districts and more than 1,000 other districts across the state, may find the 1984-85 year one to remember because of some sweeping educational reforms under House Bill 72. These include no more exemptions from exams, no social promotions, stiffened requirements for eligibility to participate in extracurricular activities, and tutoring for students having academic difficulty. But, with school starting in the middle of a sweltering August heat wave, the main thing the students want to know is: "Are all the air conditioners working?" They are, GISD Supt.

Charles Zeigler said, but in the case of the junior high building it was a close call. More than 10,000 worth of repairs to the air conditioning system there were completed Tuesday. was recently located at the penitentiary in Lansing, A Coryell County grand jury ended a six-day-long session Monday, in which 36 persons were indicted for 49 offenses. Included in the indictments were two charges of capital murder and two charges of theft by service against a pair of Copperas Cove police officers (see stories). Criminal Investigator Carroll Duke praised the grand jury for their hard work, noting that it contained both men and women, blacks, hispanics and whites. "For this purpose it was an excellent jury," he said. As is always the case, the indictments were for a wide variety of crimes.

Included in the charges were a trio allegedly involved in a theft ring. Anthony Vassar and Ruben Weston were charged with burglary of a building. Archie G. Dekeyser HI was charged with credit card abuse. Zeigler said the three were caught as a result of a cooperative effort by the Fort Hood CID, and the police departments of Killeen and Copperas Cove.

Another pair, Edna and Joseph Ahwerengh, were indicted for allegedly defrauding a Copperas Cove man of $8,500. They promised to deliver diamonds from South Africa at a cut-rate price. When he asked for collateral they turned over to him a Lincoln Continental which they supposedly owed $5,000 on. In fact they owned $17,000. The pair is still at large.

Two Copperas Cove women, Evelyn Ghose and Evelyn Margaret Livingston, were indicted for burglary of a habitation. The two allegedly stole some belongings from neighbor who was moving. Earl Mitchell Hilton was indicted for impersonating a public servant. According to Zeigler, the Copperas Cove man was "cruising a parking The Scratch Pad enrolled at Evant and 162 at Jonesboro. School officials at Evant and Jonesboro reported smooth starts. The new school year will begin today at Oglesby, with all students to report for classes by 8:20 a.m. The buses will run on regular schedule. Oglesby, which has new cafeteria-gym, will be operating a full-day, full-year kindergarten in 1984-85. Classes in Coryell County's most populous school district, Copperas Cove, will begin Monday.

Well over 5,000 students are expected there. OF THE STUDENTS expected in Gatesville, around 180 will be first-graders and 66 will be in the kindergarten. The kindergarten classrooms will be located in a remodeled wing of the elementary building instead of at the primary school, while the early childhood program has been moved from the elementary school to the primary building. The class day schedule will be the same as last year. The first bell for instruction will ring at 8:10 a.m.

"If we ever have some industry looking at us we better hide that," he joked.

Many economists consider a rate of 4 percent to be full employment, due to transitional factors-people changing jobs, and other statistical quirks.
