PAGE 2-A THE GATESVILLE MESSENGER, THURSDAY, AUGUST 30, 18M R. A. Tharp Dies At 84 Don't ftiss Leaird's Labor Day Sale R. A. (Cooter) Thtrp of Gatesville, retired Coryell County agricultural leader and West Texas cotton ginner, died Thursday in a Temple hospital.

He was 84. Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday at Scott's Funeral Chapel and were conducted by Rev. Wesley Jones. Burial was in the Turnersville Cemetery.

Mr. Tharp, who lifed most of his )ife in the Turnersville community, was born there April 9, 1900. He was the son of the late Robert and Florence Tharp, He was reared at Turnersville and, after military service during the first World War, returned to Turnersville, where he farmed and operated a seed cleaning business. He married Addie Naomi Beck in 1929. In 1951, following the death of his wife, he moved to Pecos and entered the cotton ginning business.

In 1968 he married Mrs. Onita Baize Fletcher and they resided in Pecos until 1970, when they moved to Turnersville. They moved, to Gatsville in 1983. Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Mrs.Ray (Laurene) Elder of of Boerne; a sister, Miss Laura Tharp of Waco; four step-sons, Kenneth Fletcher. Bill Fletcher, Dale Fletcher and Terry Fletcher; four step-daughters, Barbara Ledger, Wanda Pyeatt, Linda Ramage and Judy Taylor; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mr. Tharp was preceded in death by a son, Robert Beck Tharp. Pallbearers for Mr. Tharp'a funeral were Kenneth Fletcher, Dale Fletcher, Tim Tolar, Bill Fletcher, Terry Fletcher and Keith Elder. Honorary pallbearers were Rob Cathey, Earl McKinny, Travis Latham, Bo Jones, Curtis Watson, Preston Baize, Jeff Newman and Bob Tharp.

until his retirement. Mr. McCollum moved to the Gatesville area two years ago. He was a member of the Ascension Lutheran union Services for Jay McCollum, 45, of Rt. 2, Gatesville, were held at 11 a.m.

Saturday at St. John Lutheran Church in Coryell City. Pastor Dittloff conducted the rites, and burial was in the St. John Church Cemetery with Scott's in charge. Mr.

McCollum, a retired railroad employee, died Thursday in a Waco hospital. Son of the late Elvin and Julia McCollum, he was born in Harris County Sept. 28, 1938. He married the former Frances Beauboufe on Church of Houston and a member of BRAC No. 28.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Jerry (Shawn) Putnam of Houston; and two sons, Kerry McCollum of Houston and Scotty McCollum of Gatesville. and Mary Carothers, was born Dec. 31, 1896, in Coryell County and was reared here. She was married to O. Turner Dec. 26, 1916.

He died in 1964. Mrs. Turner was a member of the Hay Valley Baptist Church. Survivors Include four sons, O. C.

Turner of Red Oak, Edwin Turner of Los Alamitos, Raymond Turner of Itasca and Cecil Turner of Temple; a daughter, Mrs. Grace King of Fullerton, one sister, Mrs. Ada Carothers Autrey of Turnersville; eight grandchildren and 16 LVIA Mrs. Alice Ophelia Turner of Gatesville died Thursday in the local hospital. She was 87 and had lived in Coryell County all her life.

Services were held at 5 p.m. Saturday at Scott's Funeral Chapel and were conducted by Rev. J. F. Combs.
