PAGE 6-B THE GATESVILLE MESSENGER, THURSDAY. OCTOBER 18. 1979 THE GATESVILLE MESSENGER, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 18, 1979 PAGE 7-B Bridwell Joins GPD Record Pecan Crop Expected Waco Blood Center Supplies 34 Hospitals blood as well as other administrative expenses. The processing fee is charged to the patient on his or her hospital bill and is normally covered by health insurance plans. If a resident of a participating Red Cross city, such as Gatesville, is ever hospitalized in a non-participating area, the Red Cross will replace all blood used providing the hospital will accept the blood.

To have the blood replaced, the patient or family member should contact the Red Cross Blood Center in Waco. The Red Cross will then send the hospital an inquiry-requesting the information that already getting a bargain, feedlot operators are losing about 10 cents a pound on that 68-cent live steer," adds Uvacek. Walker Cemetery Working Slated A working day will be held Saturday. Oct. 20.

at the Walker Cemetery in the Fort Hood Reservation. All interested parties are asked to come and bring tools with which to work. FALL IS LONGER Winter lasts 89 days, 1 hour. Autumn last 89 days, 16 hours. ratail cuts from the carcass would have to be about $1.56 per pound just to pay for the animal.

This does not include any costs for slaughtering, wholesaling, cutting, wrapping, transporting or retailing, points out Uvacek. Since the average national retail price for Choice beef is now about $2.20 per pound, the consumer is paying only 64 cents per pound for the entire cost of all marketing and merchandising functions. "That's pretty cheap," contends the economist. "What's ironic about all this is that while consumers are The other 400 pounds are by-products, some of which have value, such as hides and tallow. "Even the beef carcass that is left is not all steaks and roasts." emphasizes the economist.

"The average 600-pound carcass provides only about 50 pounds of sirloin steaks. 37 pounds of rib roast and 66 pounds of round steaks. Hamburger, stew meat and miscellaneous cuts add up to another 146 pounds. Waste or cutting loss amounts to a huge 162 pounds." At 68 cents per pound for the live steer, the average cost of all Cattlemen and consumers have one major point in common--they can't understand why a steer at the feedlot brings only 68 cents per pound when a sirloin steak costs almost $3 per pound. However, the price difference sounds higher than it actually is, says Dr.

Ed Uvacek, economist in livestock marketing with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, Texas University System. Uvacek explains the price dilemma this way. "A Choice steer that weighs 1,000 pounds actually yields only about a 600-pound carcass. is needed to replace the blood. If the hospital is willing, the patient's account will be credited with the Red Cross blood.

So. what is the Red Cross Blood Center really about? It is an institution servicing people who have joined together as a community, to share a very precious part of themselves. FAT FACT According to some Chicago food consultants, the typical Thanksgiving dinner last year exceeded 2,000 calories, compared with 575 calories consumed by the Pilgrims back in 1621. Beef Still A Bargain Despite High Prices horticulturist. The U.S.

Department of Agriculture is currently estimating a crop of 95 million pounds. This compares to 26 million pounds last year." While the Texas crop is expected to set all kinds of production records, th situation is not as bright in most of the other top pecan producing states. Crops in Alabama, Mississippi, Florida and Louisiana were damaged severly by Hurricane Frederick. The crop in Georgia is down from earlier estimates. "Reports from all corners of the state indicate that a bumper crop is in the making." notes Hancock.

"This has been an excellent year for pecans as moisture conditions generally have been favorable and insect problems have not been severe. However, the major foliage disease, scab, has been a problem in some areas due to unusually high rainfall this spring and summer. "There is no question that the 1979 pecan crop will be the largest ever in Texas," says the Without a doubt, Texans will have at least one thing to brag about this year. That's the state's pecan crop. Pecan trees are loaded to the hilt this year; in fact, limbs have broken on many trees due to the heavy crop.

"All this means that there will be plenty of good quality pecans available at reasonable prices this year," points out Bluefford Hancock, horticulturist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service. Texas University System. The Central Texas Red Cross Blood Center, located in Waco, supplies the blood needs for 34 hospitals within a 28 county range. including Coryell Memorial Hospital. The Red Cross Blood Center operates solely on a volunteer donor basis.

The personnel are committed to providing patients with the highest quality of blood, at the lowest possible cost. It is their philosophy that blood is a community responsibility rather than an individual one; therefore, the Red Cross does not require the individual recipient to replace the blood. Blood replacement is a moral obligation only. The only charge made to the hospitals by the Red Cross, is a processing fee of $25 per unit of blood. This charge includes the actual cost for collecting, testing and transporting the BRIDWELL PvSbtSlJiL ioi-JiL fha ML till A GET FREE RACE CARD ft ra Th fi kA EACH VISIT to H.E.B.

Cenus Survey Conducted Here A sample of households in this area has been included in an annual survey on education which is being taken this week by the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce. Percy R.

Millard, director of the Bureau's Regional Office in Dallas, says that interviewers will visit home to obtain information about current school enrollment from nursery school through college. This information helps measure current trends in education and helps determine the need for additional or expanded educational facilities. The questions on education will supplement those asked regularly in the monthly survey on employment and unemployment conducted nationwide by the Bureau for the U.S. Department of Labor. Results of the monthly employment survey provide data on conditions in the labor force, prime indicators of the economic health of the country.

For example, in August the survey indicated that of the 103.0 million men and women in the civilian labor force, 96.9 million were employed. The Nation's unemployment rate was 6.0 percent, up from 5.7 percent in July. i Personal information supplied in the survey is kept strictly confidential by law and results are used only to compile statistical totals.
