1 6, Wednesday, March 14, 2012, The Gatesville Messenger NEWS FROM AROUND PEARL By KAY PRUETT Dos Davison has been away from Pearl for several days and he wants everyone to know that he is doggone glad to be back in Pearl. Dos says there is no place like Pearl. Dos is the son of Hote and Mary Ann Davison and the grandson of Margie Cummings. The Pearl Church of Christ received a very nice wooden glider for the church grounds. The glider was given to them by Neta Thomas Lesjak and her husband, Bill, in memory of Neta's parents, Thurman and Ruth Thomas.

Bill and Neta Lesjak were in Pearl last Wednesday to deliver the glider so they came by the Pearl Book Cottage and also visited the Pearl flea market. Linda Ray and I had a great time visiting with them and were amazed at all the places around Ireland that they have restored. This includes the old Freeman place and the Blake Lovelace place, where they reside. Also, Neta's son is restoring the old Ireland Depot. Everyone is excited that four new homes are being built in Pearl.

They are Joyce Key Kerley's home on CR 158, Bob and Judy Mead's home on CR 158, the Bower's home off CR 158 and Tammy Cummings' home on CR 152. Billy and Kim Freeman Holden of Brownwood spent time visiting in Pearl last Wednesday. Regina Medart of Austin spent a few days in Pearl with her parents, Ronald and Glennyth Medart. Jackie Brewer of Woodway visited the Pearl Bluegrass and the Pearl Book Cottage last week. Linda Ray and I enjoyed talking to Jackie and we appreciate all he does to help with books.

The March Pearl Bluegrass had a good crowd of folks and they were from many places. In the book store, we talked to folks from Kentucky, Georgia, Washington state, Iowa, New Mexico and from towns all across Texas. The musical program was very good and we believe that April will be even better. The Pearl Bluegrass has a very good website. You can see many great pictures and read all about it by going to pearlbluegrass.com.

Each month, new photos are added and in March they added pictures of the Pearl Book Cottage. The little cottage really looks good, so check it out. The Pearl Baptist Church ladies Bible study group has completed another successful program. The latest study was led by Judy Winship and was FRIDAY, SATURDAY, DANCE 8 P.M. We witness violence and destruction in the name of social justice. We see people looking for some solid basis on which to build their futures. From the past comes an answer to this problem. The people of Jeremiah's day abandoned the Word of God. They failed to hear it, and closed their hearts to its message.

People today do the same. People today need a foundation to build on. If you want stability and a well-developed sense of right and wrong, let me suggest we build on the Word of God. It has endured throughout the ages in spite of man's best efforts to ignore it, attack it, or destroy it. Jason Brady dies while awaiting organ tranplants on the book of James.

Also on the final day, they had a special program presented by Karon Wheeless about gardening and harvesting according to the Bible. All the ladies enjoyed lunch together and they had a special birthday cake for Ino Hall, who celebrated her birthday on March 7. Former Pearl resident, Anita Doyle Boren, is having medical problems, so please keep in your prayers. A few days ago, I was in the Pearl Cemetery looking for information for my records and Mack and Velma Wilkinson stopped by to visit. They started helping me look for the information and started to pick on each other.

I told Mack that he had better not pick a fight with his wife in the cemetery-she might just knock him in the head and leave him there. He said, "Huh, I have only had one fight with my wife in all the years we have been married. It started 51 years ago and is still going on." I don't know how anyone could beat that. This week's trip down memory lane from the pages of the Pleasure and Profit Club of Pearl, Texas, is from March 6, 1974. The club met for an all day session with Faye Gartman and Leota Graham.

Thirteen members and five visitors were present and the visitors were: Ino Hall, Violet Freeman, Margie and Mary Ann Cummings and a friend. A covered dish lunch was served and the day was spent quilting one quilt each for each hostess. The club met again on March 20, 1974, with Ora Mae Oney. of Relay for Life benefit Saturday The Boots Saddle Cowboy Church will host a game night Saturday to benefit the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life. As he grew older, he fell further and further behind. At GHS, Brady played baseball, but the cystic fibrosis limited his participation in that sport as well as other school activities. He estimated he missed two years of high school because of regular stays in the hospital.

He was ready to "get on with the surgery and return to a more normal lifestyle." The estimated cost of the double transplant was $800,000 and although his mother had insurance, there were co-pay and out-of-network medical costs that were a huge financial burden for the family. Many friends held fundraisers on Brady's behalf to raise the money needed for the surgery. Funeral arrangements were pending at press time. Betty Jo Woodson Byrom Betty Jo Byrom, age 86, of Gatesville, passed away on Thursday, March 8, 2012. A private graveside service will be held by the family.

All of Betty's friends and family were invited to a reception celebrating her life in the fellowship hall at Live Oak Baptist Church at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 11, 2012. Betty was born in Ft. Worth, Texas, on January 17, 1926, to the late Robert Lee Woodson Sr. and Pat Millaway Woodson.

She attended school in the Ewing community through the tenth grade and graduated from Gatesville High School in 1944. She married J.C. She became a member of Live Oak Baptist Church in 1958.

She loved her church family and taught in the Junior Department and served as co-director of the Sunday School Department for many years. She was always eager to do anything that was needed at Live Oak and was the person everyone seemed to depend on to always have the answer. She truly had da servant's heart.
