The Gatesville Messenger, Saturday, August 11, 2001, Page 3 NEWS FROM MOUND CHARBARA HOPSON, Messenger Corn gwiofrO Mr. Dan Mr. Dan Edwards, age 75, of Edwards Gatesville, died Tuesday, August 7, 2001, in a Gatesville hospital. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, August 10, at the First United Methodist Church of Gatesville with the Rev.

Johnny Miller officiating. Burial was in Restland Cemetery. Mr. Edwards was born on July 18, 1926, in the Osage community of Coryell County to the late Curt and Maggie Byrd Edwards. He was reared and attended school in Osage and Gatesville, graduating from Gatesville High School in 1944.

He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1948. While at the university, he earned All-Southeastern Conference honors playing football for the Bulldogs. He was an Ail-American in 1 947 and played in the Linda Etheridge, the mayor of Waco, declared Sunday Alton Ballard Day. Nancy Tant attended the celebration held at the Cornerstone Baptist Church in Robinson. Joe and Karlee Piller attended services Sunday at Highland Baptist Church in Waco.

Joseph and Helen Piller and Gary, Diane and Shilah Heavin have returned home from a two-week cruise to Alaska. Jed Gribble won the feature finisher trophy at the go-kart race Saturday in West. William and Janet Gribble went with him to the races. Nancy Coljins spent Friday night in Austin with Rhonda Skains. They attended the Righteous Brothers' concert Saturday in San Antonio.

Lisa Smith of Brenham spent Saturday night with Christopher and Jennifer Eberlein. Christopher and Jennifer Eberlein and children, Lisa Smith, Scott and Jocelyn Engl and Steven Rylander visited Friday evening in Waco with Alison Moffatt and family. Christopher and Jennifer Annie Rea Polston Annie Rea Polston of McGregor died Aug. 1 in Waco. She was 87.

Funeral services were held Monday at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Danny Reeves officiating. Burial was in Post Oak Cemetery under the auspices of Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 427. Mrs. Polston was born July 30, 1914, in Oglesby to the late Edwin Thomas and Virginia Davis.

She was reared in Coryell County and attended school at Crawford. On Oct. 1 1943, she married Williard Noble Polston in Waco. He preceded her in death on Sept. 1 1 974.

During World War II, she was a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell and later she and her husband owned and operated the DeLite Cafe in McGregor. She moved to Houston in 1952 where she was a waitress at Youngblood's Fried Chicken Restaurant for a year before moving to Dallas, where she continued her employment with Youngblood's at Fair Park. When the restaurant sold to El Chico, she remained with them until her retirement in 1974 when she returned to McGregor. She assisted her brother as a clerk in his clothing business until retiring again in 1986. She was a member of the First Baptist Church where she was a member of the Ruth Class.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 427, serving as worthy matron in 1979-1980. Survivors include two daughters, Virginia Falkenberg of Richmond, KY, and Peggy Petri of Carrollton; a brother, Freddie Dee Davis of McGre--gor; a sister, Mary Sue Bass of McGregor; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the first Baptist Church, 700 West Sixth Street, McGregor, TX; or the Post Oak Cemetery Association, co Dawn Barnes, 139 FM 1996, Oglesby, TX 76561. Lydia Lunette Powell Lydia Lunette Powell, 8 1 of Clute died Aug. 3 at a Clute nursing home.

Graveside services were Tuesday at Restland Cemetery in Gatesville. She and her husband had lived in the Gatesville area before moving to Clute in 1944. She was a member of the Clute Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband, Winston Clyde Powell; infant son, Gary Clyde Powell; three brothers; and three sisters. Survivors include two children, Pate Wade of Clute and Mike Powell of Houston; one brother, Joe Newt Wicker of Gatesville; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Heart Association, South Brazoria County Division, 1415 La Concha Lane, Houston, TX 77054; or the American Diabetes Association, 9430 Research Echelon Bldg. 2, Suite 300, Austin, TX 78759. Virginia Josephine Alberson Virginia Josephine Alberson, infant daughter of Billy and Tina Alberson, died Aug. 5 in Gatesville. Graveside services were held Wednesday at Restland Cemetery.

Prayer Walk planned Sunday Class of '91 schedules meeting to plan reunion Eberlein and children, Lisa, Smith, Jeff and Michelle Kerr, Michael and Holly Jahrmarkt and Todd and Alison Moffatt and children had supper Monday evening at a Japanese steak house in Waco. Cordelia Barnard visited Wednesday in Gatesville with Bob and Linda Barnard and Sherri Rodriguez and family. Sherri Rodriguez of Gatesville spent Sunday with Cordelia Barnard. Daisy Marshall and Jane Brown went to hear Walter Davidson preach Sunday in Gatesville. Kent Schiller of College Station spent Tuesday night with Clara Bomar.

Kelby Jones participated in the CTBRA rodeo in Gatesville Saturday. She came in first in barrels and second in poles. McKenzie Hopson spent Sunday with Kelby Jones. Editor's note: Wednesday, Aug. 15, marks the 1 8th year for Barbara Hopson to write the Mound News for The Gatesville Messenger.

On Saturday, Oct. 20, the class will meet from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for a barbecue at Faunt Le Roy Park. At 8:30 p.m., the class will host the annual alumni banquet.

Mitt mi Oil Bowl in 1946, the Gator Bowl in 1947 and the Sugar Bowl in 1948. In 1948, he was the No. 1 draft choice of the Pittsburgh Steelers, but opted to play for the Brooklyn Dodgers of the All-American Conference. One year later he went on to play for the Chicago Hornets. In 1950, the Hornets disbanded and the players were picked up by National Football League teams.

Mr. Edwards played for the New York Yanks, where after the 1950 season he earned a trip to play in the league's first Pro Bowl. In September of 1951, he married Joyce Howell. In 1952, he then went to play for the Dallas Texans, and finished out his NFL career with the Baltimore Colts in the 1953 and 1954 seasons. In 1955, he moved to the Canadian Football League where he played for the Vancouver Lions of British Columbia until 1958 when he became the head coach.

From 1959 until his retirement from football in 1961, he was the assistant coach for the Edmonton Eskimos in Alberta, Canada. In 1962, he and his wife purchased a wholesale gasoline distributorship, which they operated as Edwards Oil Company, from June 1962 until September 2000. He was a former trustee for the Gatesville Independent School District and a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was preepded in death by a son, Dan Marshall Edwards; and three brothers, Raymond Edwards, Owen Edwards and Alvin Edwards. "Dan was a great athlete in his day, a good businessman, and an avid sports fan.

But his real claim to fame was being the best grandpa in the world." Survivors include his wife, Joyce Edwards of Gatesville; daughter, Kathy Edwards Chasteen and husband Brad of Coppell; sisters, Ozell Westerfeld of McGregor and Mary Kate Conner of San Antonio; grandchildren, Clint, Lauren, Lindsey and Kelly of Coppell; nieces, Nancy Battle, Cynthia Sodalok, Judy Kay Cox and Pamela Berry; and nephews, Charles Ray Edwards, Curtis Edwards, David Carter, Robert and Jim Donaldson and Don and Karen Kindrick. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Gatesville or to a favorite charity. The Gatesville High School Class of 1991 will meet at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at Andy's Restaurant to continue planning for their 10-year reunion.

All class members are invited to attend. The reunion is scheduled for Oct. 19-20 during the annual homecoming weekend at GHS. Included on the agenda on Oct. 19 are the pep rally, football game and a get-together at Gatesville Country Club following the game.

Blood drive A Gatesville Community Blood Drive will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday in the First Baptist Church. All donors will receive a limited and successful school year. Then the group will pray as they walk around the outside of the high school. After the walk, participants are invited to visit other school campuses and pray while walking around those buildings.

The Monthly Women's Prayer Group meets at 7 p.m. on the last Tuesday of each month at the historic First Christian Church. The Monthly Women's Prayer Group in Gatesville is sponsoring a "prayer walk" for all ages to pray for area schools. Men, women, teenagers and children are invited to participate in the prayer walk, scheduled for 8 p.m. Sunday at Gatesville High School.

The group will meet at the flag pole on the west side of the school. Prayers will be offered for a safe Obituary Information Information on obituaries are published free of charge in The Gatesville Messenger. All obituaries follow a standard form and any request by family members for deviation from this form will require payment for the obituary.
